This season inspired us to start thinking about new applications for accent lighting. We’ve focused this blog on ways to consider soft and ambient accent lighting for your home projects.
Have you ever heard the expression that describes lighting as the “jewelry of a room”? This means that the lighting in your space can truly elevate the overall appearance and add the finishing touch to the design of the room. There are so many traditional ways of incorporating lighting into a floor plan like recessed lights, under cabinet lights in a kitchen or puck lights in a built-in cabinet. But lately, we’ve seen all sorts of new and unusual ways to light a room and are excited to share them with you! Let’s explore!
Modern Track Lighting Installation
Integrated track lighting has been popping up in house photos everywhere! This isn’t your old school, clunky track lighting we’re talking about. This is sleek, modern and unobtrusive lighting. Modern track lighting can be tucked away between exposed beams, like in the photo example below.

Or even placed discreetly on the sides of crossbeams like the example shown in the next two photos.
Fun Fact: What is a crossbeam? A crossbeam is a long, thick bar of wood, metal, or concrete that is placed between two walls or other structures, specifically to support the roof of a building. These are typically seen in homes with a vaulted ceiling.

Recessed Channel LED Light Strips
Recessing light strips into one long channel in your design may seem uber modern, but you can also consider this type of accent lighting in small doses. For example, why not add a channel along your stairway or surrounding the fireplace? Also, this could be really fun in an outdoor setting!

LED Strip Lighting
Strip lights are very versatile because they can be easily maneuvered to fit into any space. For example, your electrician can install them into your trey ceiling or hide them in cove or crown molding. Many clients like to use this type of accent light in the master bedroom trey ceiling because it puts off soft, ambient lighting, keeping the bedroom calm and serene. Don’t just think about the areas up high! Go low with your mood lighting and add a strip of Led lights to your baseboard or along the toe-kick of your kitchen island and perimeter. The options are endless!

Baseboard LED strips work great in a basement setting or theatre room, which are often dark and require a lot of extra lighting options.

Backlight Panels and Mirrors
Another fun way to create a moody space to use backlit wall or ceiling panels.
Backlit mirrors are extremely popular in bathrooms and are no longer considered just for commercial use or in boutique hotels.
Fun Fact: What are backlit mirrors? The main feature of backlit mirrors is the placement of LED lights behind the mirror, typically within the frame. This arrangement creates a soft, diffused glow that illuminates the entire reflective surface. This minimizes shadows and ensures every detail is visible.

The key is to make sure your mirror is dimmable!

Also think about adding a full-length backlit mirror in your exercise space to enhance your workout sessions.

Don’t forget to highlight your wine and liquor storage! What a great feature to show off during a special gathering.
Smaller Impact Lighting
Small but mighty…
Not to be overlooked are motion sensor secondary lights. For example, motion sensor closet and pantry lights and motion sensor nightlights. These are great to place along a staircase, in guest bedrooms and bathroom and kid’s bedrooms. There are even wall plates that come with built-in nightlights. These are great in just about every room and have a very affordable price tag.
