A Note From Heather
Our Top Requested Designs
In previous newsletters, we have mentioned that we often ask our clients to bring some examples of the look they want to achieve to our first meeting. Some bring Pinterest or Houzz while others bring magazine clippings. An interesting trend we have noticed is that over the years, we have consistently gotten requests for home designs from popular movies, tv shows and even local restaurants, hotels or stores. People love a certain design or even a design feature such as lighting, wall treatments and color palettes. We noticed that many of the same examples continued to show up on our desk.
Even our team gains inspiration from designs we see in our down time. Wes Anderson, for instance, has some great, over the top rooms featured in his movies. A certain wallpaper may be too dramatic or a different color in the movie, but it still inspired us to use a variation of it for some of our clients.
This month we want to share with you the top 10 most requested movie or tv designs that our clients love!
Have a great month!

Top 10 Most Coveted Home Designs From Popular Movies
1. Father of the Bride – Exterior
This house is one of the most requested for its curb appeal. This home is Traditional, but there is still quite a bit of architectural interest from the curved lines on the front stoop to the iron railings on the porte-cochére. That white picket fence and English landscaping makes everyone dream of this home!
2. It’s Complicated – Kitchen
This kitchen nails the rustic, California ranch vibe that creates a warm and inviting space. Whether you want to sit down at the island with a glass of wine or spend all day cooking, it’s all possible in this gourmet chef’s kitchen. Plenty of charm is featured with the open shelves and curtained cabinet while giving a slight nod to the industrial trend with the chosen appliances and lighting. No wonder it’s a favorite!
3. Something’s Gotta Give – Writing Nook & Great Room
Clients still refer to this movie when requesting a casual, beach theme for their home. This blue and white striped rug is the standout piece in the Great room and is asked for often. While the kitchen is also a favorite in this movie, many clients dream of this Master Bedroom with a writing nook. How luxurious to have extra space to relax and enjoy quiet solitude.
4. The Royal Tenenbaums – Wall Color, Staircase & Phone Booth
As with most Wes Anderson movies, viewers are delighted by his use of color and pattern. This house is often brought up by clients when they desire a grand entrance. Whether it’s wallpaper, a pop of color or artwork, they want some sort of wow factor. This house also has a phone booth closet that one of our clients was inspired by and built in her house!
5. The Proposal – Great Room, Fireplace & Rustic/Lodge Interior
The large stone fireplace in this Great Room is the focal point in this popular movie’s house. Many clients refer to the wood beams, stone and wall paneling because they desire a rustic lodge interior design but one that’s done in a modern, sophisticated way.
6. Stepmom – Exterior
The porch on this house is a great inspiration to many of our clients. We live in the South where wrap around porches make many of our client’s wish lists! Perfect for 3 season sitting with sweet tea in our temperate climate. Other architectural details from this movie such as the corbels, columns and railings are also often requested.
7. Practical Magic – Pantry
This pantry space was used as more of an apothecary in the movie but it inspired many clients to ask for a large pantry or Butler’s Pantry with an island for food prep. We’ve even gotten a request for an island for flower arranging!
8. The Holiday – Master Bedroom & Bathroom in the LA Home
This bedroom thrilled many clients because in one of the scenes, the actress lowers the shades, turns off the lights and puts on music with a remote control. This bedroom exudes the ultimate luxury and relaxation vibe! As if that weren’t enough, the Master Bathroom space is just as special with a free standing tub and glass cabinets. The wood beams are an especially nice touch.
9. Under the Tuscan Sun – Garden Bedroom Balcony & Plaster Walls
This movie is a fun one to watch as she takes a dilapidated villa and brings it back to its former glory. While the interior is beautiful and full of character and color, the most requested feature is actually the outdoor private garden space and the bedroom balcony. Along with the aged, romantic plaster walls.
10. Twilight – Modern Exterior & Kitchen
Even if you don’t want to live in a modern space, this house impresses most people. The exterior is often referred to because of its mix of wood, concrete and metal. While we can’t replicate the private setting and amazing woods, we can design large windows and doors to enhance whatever amazing view you might have. The extra large picture windows in the kitchen are a favorite of clients who are wanting to take advantage of an amazing lake or mountain view.
Although there are many more movies that inspire our clients, these are the top 10 most requested.
Another great source of inspiration, aside from popular resources such as Houzz, Pinterest and HGTV can be your local restaurants and hotels. Many of our clients will describe the colors, wall treatments, lighting, flooring and even the bathroom vanities and faucets in local establishments. You can get some great ideas for your home just by going out and about! On popular TV shows and magazines now, too, you will see the “get the look” features where you can buy certain pieces you are seeing.
